1993. Jock Wallace used to talk about character, but this team had it in trumps. This time the treble was an afterthought in the year of the Champions' League campaign. Remember, there were 44 league games that season. The previous season, Motherwell had responded to the challenge of a bad start to the season by proposing that relegation be cancelled for that year, and the bottom half of the Premier League quickly jumped on board.
The morning after the victory at Leeds, Walter Smith famously turned round to Stuart McCall in the hotel bar and reminded him we had a game on Saturday. We did. We won. 1-0 at Parkhead. Stuart McCall, by the way, was Mr. consistency that season, it seemed that no game was complete without the announcement of "Stuart McCall, the McEwan's Lager man of the match". The next time we went to Parkhead our unbeaten run was brought to an end at 44 I Don't remember much about the game, but I do remember the Rangers end singing away to an empty stadium 40 minutes after the game, and the police begging us to leave. The Scottish Cup Semi-final against Hearts, four days before the game at Marseilles, was a come-from-behind victory Ally McCoist scoring a late winner, and taking an uncomfortably long time to get back up afterwards. Gary McSwegan scored the Championship clincher at Airdrie, and Neil Murray scored the opener in the Cup Final win over Aberdeen. The Final and Semi-Final were both at Parkhead, the Cup Final was a great occasion, with Follow Follow organising flags and confetti - my contribution consisted of a couple of full bin liners I found beside the shredder when I was leaving work the night before. The following year the team suffered the effects - every player had an injury at some stage, but once again we came within a game of winning a second treble. A poor Cup Final performance against Dundee United ending a streak of seven domestic trophies in a row. So how does this year's team compare ? I'd say this team is more about potential than achievement, the bulk of the team are at an age that we can expect their best years are in front of them, and we have every reason to expect that the team as a whole will improve. The season was less dramatic than the other campaigns as well. I'll rephrase that. One match aside, the season was less dramatic. The cups were straightforward, apart from a dodgy showing against Falkirk and a tough Scottish Cup final. We built a healthy enough lead in the league, which was enough to tide us over the stutter in the spring. When we beat Aberdeen at Ibrox at the end of April, it was the only time all season we came from behind to win. I'd say the heroes are less well-defined than previous years, but maybe that's me just getting older. Sure, Rod Wallace had a great season, Lorenzo Amoruso looked like the captain of Rangers, Giovanni Van Brockhorst and Barry Ferguson showed their class, although perhaps not for the full season. But the hardest award to give out would have to be the most improved player - Johannsen, either Ferguson, Craig Moore, Tony Vidmar ? Colin Hendry, interviewed after the Cup Final - "Well, we've got to do it again next season, haven't we ? If we don't, we'll be failures" I can't agree. If we don't win the League we'll be failures. If we let ourselves down in Europe, we're failures. The cup finals are just good days out and the chance for a few players to wear a silly hat. Fun, though.
